Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these medications need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to original mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
